Overcoming Procrastination With A March Madness Bracket And Newton’s Law Of Motion | Really?

by Ian Belanger on March 29, 2011

Procrastination We All Do It

We all procrastinate, I know I do. When I do, I usually get mad at myself for doing it. Well I used to. I have overcome my procrastination problem and you can too.

I’ve got a tip for you that will solve your Procrastination problem and it’s so simple you won’t believe that it actually works. Let me tell you now, it does and it is based on science. No really.

How Can March Madness Help End Procrastination?

For those of you who don’t know what march madness is. In the US every march, college basketball has its premiere event, a tournament with 68 teams fighting to win one trophy. We call it March Madness. They use a bracket to determine who plays who, based on their records from the season and many other factors that I won’t bore you with right now. One loss and you go home.

Anyway, how can this help with procrastination? Well we are going to use a bracket to prioritize what tasks we should complete and when to complete them.

Filling Out Your End Procrastination Bracket

Here is a list of the steps you need to take, to end procrastination forever.

  • First, Write down all of your tasks that need to be completed, anything you need to get done. But, and this is very important, DO NOT put them in any particular order or by priority. Just write them down in a single column list, as they pop into your head.
  • Second, Take your list and turn it into a bracket, like so.
    Overcome Procrastination

Use a March Madness Bracket to Overcome Procrastination

If you have an odd number of tasks, then either add another task or just give the odd one out a bye week(which means just move it to the next round)

  • Third, Once you have all of your brackets done, go back to the top and play the first game. This is where my technique is different from all of the “Motivational Guru’s” out there. I want you to pick the Easier task of the 2 in the first bracket and so on down the line. Always picking the easier task (I’ll explain why in the next paragraph.)
  • Now, once you finish the first round, always picking the easiest task, do the same for the next round and so on, until you get down to only 2 tasks (the 2 easiest tasks on your list)
  • From these 2 tasks, pick one as a winner, the easier one.
  • Then complete that task and move on to the loser of the final game. The next easiest task.

How Newton’s Law Of Motion Ties Into Overcoming Procrastination

Do you know Newton’s Law of Motion? Well it basically states that “A body at rest tends to stay at rest and a body in motion tends to stay in motion.”

Also, “The heavier that body is, the harder it is to get moving” Look at it like this. Let say you have a train with 100 full cars and you have another with 1 empty car. Which do you think will be easier to get moving. Well it’s the empty one of course. So in order to gain momentum in your own tasks, you start with the easy ones first, because it is much easier to gain momentum when the tasks are easier.

Once you have that forward momentum, then you can move on to the harder tasks on your list. Doing this will help you accomplish so much more and this in turn, will lift your spirits and will stop you from getting angry with yourself for procrastinating.

Procrastination can easily be overcome by starting with your easiest task, so it’s time to stop worrying and putting things off. Start easy, gain momentum and then the hard tasks won’t seem so daunting, because you will have momentum on your side.

Remember Newton’s Law – A body at rest tends to stay at rest and the heavier that body is (your harder tasks) the harder it is to get moving. So don’t start with the harder stuff. Start easy and procrastination will be a thing of the past.

Hi Ian,

I like your analogy here. We enter Daily Madness sometimes when our minds and life are cluttered. Setting up a bracket creates order in the mind and order in your life. I also prefer to get the easier stuff done first; gain the momentum which carries you throughout the day. Thanks for sharing!

Howdy Ian,
Procrastination/delay is indeed dangerous. I love this Chinese quote that says
“The best time to plant a used was 20 years ago. The next best time is NOW!”
Peace!

Hi Ian, what a great tip because I do suffer from procrastination (don’t we all?) It’s a really creative way and one that I can relate to. An idea just came to me and I don’t know if it will work but allow me to share. When you get to Step 3 how about selecting the easiest of the two tasks and just do it. So the difficult task then gets to the next round and then you have to choose between which of the two tasks is easier. At the end, instead of the easiest task you get the hardest but you have already started the momentum so by the time you get to the most difficult one you are already in the zone :)

Hi Diana,

I like your idea as well, the great thing about this technique, you can make it work for you however you want. It’s not how you get to the finish, but that you get there somehow.

Hi Ian,

Using the bracket is a unique idea to tackling procrastination! How creative! Procrastination definitely affects us all at one point or another. No matter what we do taking the first step is so important. It’s too easy to stay in procrastination but if we take even a little step towards action it makes it easier for us to keep taking steps!

Hi Stacy,

That first step is always the most important and the hardest one to take. Using a bracket can make it kinda like a game, make it fun. I am glad you liked my post.

Ian, aloha. Loved this concept. You are so right that if we start the momentum going by checking off items, we are much more apt to keep going and pick up speed.

In terms of the satisfaction that comes from, being able to check something off your “to do” list, I read that there actually is a physiological response that accounts for that feeling.

When you check off an item, you actually experience an endorphin rush. Carrying it forward with what you are saying, Ian, when you feel good about doing something, you are much more apt to keep going so you receive more of the same.

Again, great analogy, Ian. Enjoy a magnificent day. Aloha. Janet

Hi Janet,

I thought that this concept was a good fit for this time of year, being March. I have felt that rush you talk about, especially when I solve a problem that I have been working on for a while. It is a great feeling and using this technique can help people feel that way more often.

Hey Ian,

This by far is a deadly disease. We all know the cure of it and yet some folks still let take over their lives. Taking small actions will get someone moving forward and progressing. Great job with the analogy!

Have a great day…

Yes it can be deadly to a business and yet so many people still do it. I use this technique, because I was one of those people, “The Procrastinator” That was me and it held me back so many times. This technique will hopefully help others as it has helped me.

This is awesome! I never really looked at it like this, always tackling the tough tasks first. This makes an awful lot of sense to me, though, building momentum as you begin the easy stuff.

Great information. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Gregory,

I am glad you like it Gregory. I always thought that it would be best to do the harder projects first to get them out of the way, but really doing easier things first creates the momentum you need to finish the tougher projects.

Nice work Ian!

Great method for getting over procrastination. As you say, it happens to us all at sometime or another…

I tended to disagree as I started reading – my current approach is to tackle harder tasks earlier in the day, then the easier ones as I get more tired later on.

But I realize that your inclusion of Newton’s law puts your strategy into perspective – if you need to get some momentum going, it makes sense to start with the easier tasks an build up from there.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Ian,

I like your creative approach to managing procrastination and I can see how this can work, especially fro someone who can’t get started at all. Once the momentum is in swing and one is completing tasks, one also develops the confidence to move on to those harder jobs.

I have to say though that I don’t have much of a problem starting the easy tasks on my list.

The problem I have is letting them go so that I can move on to the more challenging aspects of my day. That’s when procrastination rears it’s ugly head for me!

Maybe what I need to do is use your appraoch with all the difficult tasks I have and in this way I will move from moderately challenging to very challenging?

Hi Marcus,

I know what you mean. Starting those harder tasks can be tough. That is why I like this approach. Momentum tends to keep me moving, so this works very well for me.

All I can say is “To each his own” I like to take ideas and make them work for me. Whatever you do to combat procrastination, as long as it works for you, that’s all that matters.

I think support from other people also plays a key part in ending procrastination. I remember when i was doing the re-design on my website, i was putting it off longer and longer until some followers actually started asking when it would be released, which got me back in to doing it – so other people do play a part in how well you get over procrastination.

Yes a moving body does tend to move more and that is why I like to start with easier tasks to get that momentum and get my brain working. Then jump to harder tasks once I have the momentum.

Ian, that is a great approach, I have to say. Equating the hardest task to the biggest rock is a good way to look at it. I also try to do the same and start taking care of the easier tasks first to get the ball (or the rock) rolling so to speak and then once I am in the swing of things and have the momentum I need, I can tackle the harder tasks faster and with less procrastination.

Hi Jean,

I think it is important to get started in a positive manner and finishing little projects will give you that extra boost to get the bigger projects finished.

Of course this won’t work for everybody, but I think it will for most people.
